Location and Area

Elk Creek Ranch is 3 miles north of South Fork, located in south central Colorado, just off West State Highway 149 in Rio Grande County. The South Fork Area is where the South Fork of the Rio Grande joins the main body of the Rio Grande. Situated at the western edge of the San Luis Valley, it is one of the biggest intermountain valleys in the world.

Colorado’s upper Rio Grande from the Rio Grande Reservoir above Creede through Wagon Wheel Gap and South Fork to Del Norte is “a high-country angler’s paradise...an undiscovered paradise,” according to American Angler, the magazine of fly fishing. With its perfect summer temperatures that average a low of 50° and a high of 78°, the Rio Grande around South Fork has been designated Gold Medal trout water, which means it offers the greatest potential for trophy trout fishing success in Colorado. Nearby Creede offers shopping, dining and the nationally acclaimed Creede Repertory Theater, is only 20 minutes away (airport accommodates private jets). Nearby Wolf Creek Pass has numerous year-round recreational possibilities. These include Wolf Creek Ski Area, which is known for consistently having some of the best snow in Colorado. Snowfall records average 465 inches annually.

South Fork is 1 hour east of Pagosa Springs, 2 hours east of Durango, 1 hour west of Alamosa, 2 hours northwest of Taos, 3 hours north of Santa Fe, 3.5 hours west of Colorado Springs, 3 hours south of Crested Butte and 4 hours north of Albuquerque.
