Wildlife and Recreation

The Ranch and surrounding Rio Grande National Forest have a variety of wildlife, including mule deer, elk, turkey, grouse, ptarmigan, bighorn sheep, snowshoe rabbits, coyote, bobcat or cougar, soaring raptors and even an occasional bear. There is even a pair of twin moose on the Ranch! For recreation, there is downhill skiing at Wolf Creek, which is 30 minutes from the Ranch. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling are also available throughout the area. Ice-skating on the Ranch lake is fun for adults and children in the winter. Access to some of the best fly-fishing in Colorado is on the Rio Grande River, with 70 miles of Gold Medal water. Summertime is filled with opportunities for biking or horseback riding, hiking, rock climbing, Jeep or four wheeling and ATV trails in the area. Rafting, boating and kayaking are also available on the Rio Grande River, which runs through the Ranch.
