Wits End is north of Bayfield, Colorado, which is on Highway 160 between Durango and Pagosa Springs, then about 18 miles to the north end of Lake Vallecito. The ranch is approximately 25 miles northeast of Durango via Florida Road. The ranch address is 254 County Road 500.

General Area

The Lake Vallecito area is one of the premier recreation areas of Colorado and has some of the best lake fishing in the state for pike, lake trout, bass, walleye and more. Other water activities include waterskiing, sailing and general boating. To the east, Wolf Creek Ski Area is one of the undiscovered (almost) ski areas in the state, and can often boast of having the most snowfall. To the west, near the town of Mancos, is Mesa Verde National Park, an international destination with its captivating Indian ruins. Twenty minutes north of Durango is Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort, a destination resort for excellent winter skiing and summer recreation. Durango is a town of approximately 20,000 which has most of the stores, fine restaurants, and other amenities found in much larger cities. Durango is also home to the Durango to Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, another international destination.


Approximately 63 acres (Main parcel is approximately 62 acres and zoned Country Tourist / Dude Ranch; second parcel is 1 acre and is zoned Local Commercial). Main Lodge

The focal point of the ranch is the "Old Lodge at the Lake," a wonderfully renovated 133-year-old building that houses a classic "western elegant" tavern and restaurant, with a seating capacity of about 150. On the upper level you will find a library / reading room and a billiard area. The 1836 Crystal Tavern Mirrors that grace the bar area and dining room are from the Crystal Palace in London. The building is approximately 8,551 square feet with pine log siding, a metal roof and an 800 square foot deck.

Office / Spa Complex

Approximately 3,739 square feet with a 900 square foot apartment above. This facility includes the main office and check-in area, a bonus room that has been used as a gift shop, and a spa. Cabins are of log or log siding, with kitchens and dining areas, fireplaces and front porches with log swings, cozy hand hewn furniture, and there is even a rustic bench around a towering ponderosa pine.

Other Improvements

The Activities Barn / Event Center is a structure of approximately 7,150 square feet, which can be used for weddings, business and social gatherings, and other special events. The building has a concrete floor and a mezzanine level of about 3,000 square feet.

As with other guest ranches, horseback riding has been the main activity, and at Wits End the riding is excellent—miles and miles of trails on the National Forest and the Weminuche Wilderness Area. Numerous other activities include waterskiing, hiking, mountain biking, lake and stream fishing, whitewater rafting, archery, water sleds, sail boating and cattle sorting. Deer and elk hunting in the fall is also an option. Several ponds on the ranch are stocked and offer some excellent fishing for all ages.
