Best Day Trips Around Durango

August 6, 2025

Durango is positioned at the heart of Southwest Colorado, making it the perfect launching pad for adventures. From alpine lakes and historic towns to hot springs and national parks, incredible destinations are just a short drive away. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful afternoon by the water, a cultural experience, or a lively mountain town to explore, these day trips deliver memorable experiences with minimal drive time.

Vallecito Reservoir

Distance: ~18 miles | Drive Time: 30 minutes

Vallecito Reservoir offers peaceful alpine beauty just 30 minutes from Durango. Paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, and hiking are all popular activities on and around the lake. Wildlife sightings are common, with elk, osprey, and even the occasional moose spotted near the water. It’s a local favorite for escaping into nature without committing to a long drive.

The area features several Forest Service campgrounds and charming amenities like the “Tour of Carvings” memorial sculptures and the Vallecito Marina for boat rentals and snacks. Whether you’re heading out for a quick morning paddle or spending the day exploring trails and picnic spots, Vallecito provides an easy, refreshing getaway close to home.

Silverton

Distance: ~50 miles | Drive Time: 1 hour

The drive to Silverton along the famed Million Dollar Highway is an experience in itself, winding through high mountain passes and offering panoramic views that rival any scenic byway in the country. Once in Silverton, you’ll be greeted by colorful Victorian buildings, historic mining landmarks, and a welcoming small-town atmosphere.

Explore the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad station, visit local shops and museums, or hit the trails surrounding the town for alpine adventure. In summer, wildflowers blanket the high country, and in winter, the area becomes a haven for snowmobiling and backcountry skiing. Silverton perfectly blends historic charm with outdoor excitement.

Pagosa Springs

Distance: ~60 miles | Drive Time: 1 hour

Pagosa Springs is famous for its natural hot springs, where you can relax in soothing geothermal pools along the San Juan River while taking in beautiful mountain views. After a soak, stroll through downtown to enjoy local dining, browse art galleries, or check out boutique shops.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Pagosa offers river rafting, fishing, and hiking opportunities in warmer months. During the winter skiing at Wolf Creek Ski Area or the hot springs are favorites. Whether you’re visiting for wellness, adventure, or both, Pagosa Springs is one of the region’s most versatile day trips.

Mesa Verde National Park

Distance: ~35 miles | Drive Time: 1 hour

Mesa Verde National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most unique cultural destinations in the country. The park showcases ancient cliff dwellings built by the Ancestral Pueblo people over 700 years ago, offering visitors an incredible window into history. Ranger-led tours, scenic drives, and informative exhibits at the visitor center bring the story of Mesa Verde to life.

Beyond the archaeology, the park features sweeping canyon views and rugged high-desert landscapes. Be sure to book guided dwelling tours in advance during the busy season and allow enough time to explore scenic overlooks and walking trails. It’s an ideal blend of culture, history, and natural beauty just over an hour from Durango.

Ouray

Distance: ~76 miles | Drive Time: 1 hour 45 minutes

Ouray, often called the “Switzerland of America,” is surrounded by towering peaks and cascading waterfalls. Visitors can soak in the Ouray Hot Springs, hike the Perimeter Trail for panoramic views, or visit Box Canyon Falls Park for an up-close experience with one of Colorado’s most beautiful waterfalls.

The town’s charming main street is lined with restaurants, galleries, and shops, making it perfect for a relaxing afternoon stroll. In winter, the world-famous Ouray Ice Park draws climbers from around the world, while summer brings endless Jeep and hiking trail adventures. It’s an easy day trip packed with small-town charm and dramatic alpine scenery.

Telluride

Distance: ~110 miles | Drive Time: 2 hours 10 minutes

While technically just beyond the two-hour mark, Telluride is worth the extra ten minutes on the road. Nestled in a stunning box canyon, this former mining town turned luxury destination offers a unique combination of natural beauty and vibrant culture. Ride the free gondola for breathtaking views, explore boutiques and art galleries, or take in the impressive Victorian architecture.

Telluride also has a packed events calendar, from world-class film and music festivals to outdoor adventures like hiking to Bridal Veil Falls or, in the winter, skiing at one of the nation’s premier resorts. For those willing to extend their day just a bit, Telluride delivers an unforgettable mountain-town experience.
