Fall in Southwest Colorado is like watching nature paint with a vibrant palette, and there’s no better time to experience the stunning scenery of this region than when the leaves start to change. With mountain vistas, shimmering lakes, and winding roads that seem to lead straight into the heart of autumn’s splendor, Durango and its surrounding areas are prime locations for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the magic of fall.

If you’re ready to take in the crisp air and vibrant hues of Colorado’s fall, here are some of the best spots to experience the season’s colors. In 2026, expect the high country around Silverton to peak in mid to late September, with the valleys around Durango holding color into mid October. This year’s light snowpack and warm summer mean the aspens may turn a little earlier than usual, so plan on the early side.

Million Dollar Highway

The Million Dollar Highway, part of the iconic San Juan Skyway, is one of the most stunning drives in the entire state. This stretch of road runs from Durango to Ouray, cutting through the heart of the San Juan Mountains. As you wind through hairpin turns, you’ll be greeted by towering cliffs, expansive valleys, and vibrant aspens that set the mountains aglow with golden yellows and fiery oranges.

The highway’s name might suggest grandeur, but the real riches lie in the mesmerizing views that transform with the seasons. This route is perfect for those wanting an immersive fall experience, with opportunities to stop for panoramic views, hiking trails, and quaint mountain towns like Silverton. Before you go, check COtrip for closures and delays. Crews have been active on Red Mountain Pass this year, and fall maintenance work is common on this stretch.

La Plata Canyon

If you’re looking for a more secluded yet equally stunning fall foliage experience, La Plata Canyon is the place to be. Located just west of Durango off US 160, about halfway to Mancos, this less-traveled route winds through the La Plata Mountains and offers a sense of intimacy with nature. The combination of tall pines, cottonwoods, and golden aspens creates a magical scene, with bright leaves dancing against the rugged mountain backdrop.

This drive takes you off the beaten path and deep into the heart of the canyon, making it perfect for those who crave a quiet moment in nature. Whether you stop to explore hiking trails or simply soak in the changing colors, La Plata Canyon is a hidden fall treasure.

Hermosa Cliffs

The drive along Hermosa Cliffs on Highway 550 is a must for those looking for a quick escape to fall wonderland. Located just 20 minutes from Durango, this short but stunning route offers a more compact yet equally beautiful display of fall colors. Aspens blaze in gold along the cliffs, while the valley below shimmers in a spectrum of autumn hues.

This is an excellent option if you’re short on time but still want to enjoy some of the best fall scenery Southwest Colorado offers. Be sure to stop at the overlooks along the way to take in the full splendor of the changing leaves. Purgatory Resort runs weekend operations through October 4 this year, so you can pair the drive with a scenic chairlift ride above the changing valley.

Lemon Reservoir

For those who prefer a serene, nature-filled experience, the road to Lemon Reservoir is ideal. A scenic 45-minute drive from Durango, this route takes you through meandering mountain roads lined with aspen groves that glow in brilliant shades of yellow. As you near the reservoir, the landscape opens up, offering clear views of the water reflecting the fall foliage.

This is the perfect spot for a peaceful afternoon picnic or a leisurely walk along the water. Lemon Reservoir’s quiet calm makes it a hidden sanctuary for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle and fully immerse themselves in fall’s beauty.

Vallecito Lake

Just a short drive from Durango, Vallecito Lake is another excellent spot to see fall’s spectacular colors. The road to the lake is a visual treat, with towering peaks and dense forests that slowly give way to the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows of fall. Once you reach the lake, the sight of colorful leaves reflected in the calm, shimmering water creates a perfect autumn scene.

In addition to the fall colors, Vallecito Lake offers hiking, boating, and fishing, and the marina stays open through September. The lake sits about 25 minutes north of Bayfield, an easy day trip from anywhere in the area.
