What’s the largest mountain range in Colorado?
The answer is the San Juan Mountains — and if that answer surprises you, it’s nothing compared to the surprises that await in the San Juan National Forest.
This 1.8-million-acre San Juan National Forest is a stormy ocean of tall mountain peaks that’s 2.3 times larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined. It’s the kind of place everyone dreams of having next door — and in Durango, that dream is as real as the warm summer sunshine.
Here are four hidden gems waiting for you in the San Juan National Forest:
The west fork of the San Juan River leads you to a paradise deep within the National Forest: a natural hot springs with three pools.
You can find the hot springs by starting at West Fork Campground and following route 648 until it turns into a hiking trail. Plan a fairly relaxed six-hour hike — a walk in the park by Colorado standards.
If you feel like taking in some spectacular views from a car, motorcycle, or bike, the Million Dollar Highway is the way to do it.
The length of U.S. Highway 550 between Ouray and Durango is undoubtedly one of the most jaw-dropping stretches of highway anywhere on the continent. Throughout three snaking mountain passes, you’ll see old mines, mountain views, and access to hikes and camping aplenty.
Just don’t risk it in winter.
Island Lake is one of those incredible finds that takes you up high (12,400 feet, to be exact) and treats you to some Caribbean-esque water for your trouble. Island Lake is cradled in a high valley surrounded by jagged peaks that are likely to have patches of snow even in late summer. If you’re brave enough to take a dip in the frigid waters, you’ll want to make sure you have some warm clothes to get into after!
San Juan National Forest also hosts Colorado’s third-largest natural lake, at a mild 10,000 feet. Emerald Lake is below the timberline, surrounded by gorgeous evergreens and shimmering mountain peaks.
Emerald isn’t the easiest peak to reach — it wouldn’t be a “hidden” gem if it were — but it’s well worth the hike. Hike about 10 miles northwest of Vallecito Reservoir, and be sure to carry provisions and camping gear. Get there in time to watch the sunset over the crystal-clear waters.
