One of Durango’s trademark boast-worthy phrases you will hear from locals is “We have more restaurants per capita than San Francisco.” The Durango Herald recently researched this topic to make sure it still holds true today! (Durango’s claim to ‘most restaurants per capita’ holds true)
Durango offers some of the best cuisine in Colorado! There are so many different options to choose from and the atmosphere and vibe in each restaurant offers a unique and delicious experience. Main Avenue is lined with places to grab a bite and as locals we each have our favorites. Below is a list of our top five downtown restaurants in Durango.
- Ken And Sue’s Restaurant is a favorite of both locals and visitors year-around. Chef Ken’s personally crafted menu features a diverse offering, including seafood, steak, Asian-inspired dishes, Gluten free options, decadent desserts, and other favorites. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful.
- Located right next door to our downtown office is Fired Up Pizzeria. Who doesn’t enjoy a slice of pizza for lunch! The pizzas are made with hand crafted dough, topped with specialty imported ingredients and cooked in a traditional-style wood fired pizza oven. A rooftop dining and bar area was just added last year so you can enjoy your pizza while taking in the beautiful scenery of downtown Durango.
- El Moro Tavern has a steampunk ambiance that blends first-rate dishes with architectural reminders of the town’s Wild West past. The staff’s food and beverage compatibility knowledge is surpassed by very few in town. Order any cocktail you can think of and you will receive just that! The location also lays claim to one of “Durango’s Strangest Shootouts” in January of 1906. Visit their site to learn more about this story.
- Eolus Bar & Dining is not what you would expect to find in an old west, mountain town. The selections rival any ‘big city’ restaurant! Touted as one of the nicest restaurants in town, with exquisite food and excellent service! Incredible culinary creations that are always prepared perfectly. Eolus is for discerning patrons who value the dining experience.
- Chimayo Stone Fired Kitchen is Contemporary restaurant & bar serving stone-fired Southwestern dishes in a 19th-century building. The word Chimayo is derived from the Tewa Indian word for the local landmark, the hill of Tsi Mayoh. The ambiance is striking, with colorful lighting and large windows that open to the main street. You can find several menu options from Southwestern and Mediterranean cuisine, all uniquely prepared in a stone-fired hearth oven.
