There’s a chill in the air today that can only mean one thing, the winter season is almost upon us. Here at Legacy Properties West, that means we are dusting off our skis, waxing up our snowboards and getting our snowshoes ready. One of the best perks of living in Durango, CO is our proximity to Purgatory Resort. Last year, I think we’re all aware that we lost some precious end-of-season days on the mountain due to COVID-19 concerns, but this year the Purgatory team has made improvements and changes to ensure a safe and fun season for all.
The mountain is scheduled to open on Saturday, November 21st this year, just in time for a great Thanksgiving weekend. This year, they plan to operate daily through Sunday, April 4, 2021. The extended season will include Saturdays and Sundays through April 18, 2021.
Purgatory will be implementing a cap of daily guests this season to comply with capacity guidelines. But don’t worry, they plan to ensure that pass holders will have daily access. This year, the mountain is planning for all tickets, lessons and rental products to be purchased through a convenient online checkout. Also in development is an online food and beverage ordering system. All facets of the resort’s operations are evolving with the goal of providing contactless options where ever possible. This season’s guests can also expect modified ski school, rentals, parking lot, and shuttle operations. The resort staff is working with public health experts to ensure the health and safety of their team and their guests. Staff is subjected to daily temperature checks, and sanitation practices have been increased throughout the resort.
The NOAA is predicting a decent snow year this year which translates into an amazing season of power days up on the mountain. To help manage all that powder the resort has added three new snowcats to it’s fleet for terrain grooming. Another addition is the purchase of energy-efficient TechnoAlpin fan guns. Using fan technology, the guns will allow the snowmaking team to increase snow production, especially during the early season. In fact, they have already begun snow production. Hot on the heels of recent early snowfalls the resort began manufacturing snow on October 28th and plans to continue every night until the season opens.
