The mountains are alive with the sound of music every summer in Durango when the Music in the Mountains Festival comes to town. Originally founded in 1987 by conductor Mischa Semanitzky, this festival has produced an exceptional event for over 30 years with the highest caliber of musicians. One of the top events of the summer in Durango, Colorado. Experience the sounds of orchestra, chamber, and conservatory performances of classical and world music, featuring some of the country’s biggest names in classical music.
The 33rd season began July 6 and ran through July 28. The main difference this year from past years is the venue. This year the main events were hosted by Fort Lewis Concert Hall. Special events and smaller concerts continued in places like Durango churches, the Sunflower Theatre in Cortez, Bayfield Performing Arts Center and Sky Ute Casino Event Center in Ignacio.
This is an incredible opportunity to support music education programs in the Four Corners area while experiencing the wonderful sounds of classical music in a fantastic summer setting. If you missed this event, there is no need to worry. You can be sure to check it out next summer when you come to visit!
